On the occasion of the publication of the novelist-essayist Geoff Dyer's latest digressive interpretive rhapsody, Zona: A Book About a Film About a Journey to a Room, the New York Institute for the Humanities, in conjunction with the Illustration Department at Parsons The New School for Design, will be presenting a screening of the film in question, the legendary Soviet master Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 masterpiece STALKER, introduced by Mr. Dyer, but then interrupted, every half hour or so, by a conversation among a distinguished panel of Tarkovsky fanatics, including:

One could easily pull together dozens of such testimonials to the genius of Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986), arguably the greatest Russian film director after Eisenstein, and for that matter one of the greatest anywhere in the world across the entire Twentieth Century. Although best known among everyday filmgoers for his 1972 metaphysical science fiction adventure, Solaris, among cineastes he is equally well prized for such films as Andrei Rublev (1965) about a 15th Century Russian icon painter; the highly autobiographical The Mirror (1974); Nostalghia (1982) and The Sacrifice (1984), both completed in exile, before his death from lung cancer (although some suspected slow poisoning by the KGB) in 1986.

STALKER (1979), the last film Tarkovsky completed before leaving the Soviet Union, takes place in a dystopian near future "in our small country" (a formulation designed to get the script past the censors), where a wide geographical zone has been cordoned off in the wake of some mysterious calamity (an alien landing, a lethal accident of some sort?), and though hardly any who enter it ever return, a few insanely brave (or perhaps just insane) individuals persist in trying to break into the territory in the hopes of making their way to a mysterious room in which their deepest wishes will somehow be realized. With eerie echoes back toward a sort of gulag-in-reverse and uncanny anticipations forward toward the Chernobyl catastrophe which would only occur over fifteen years after the film's completion, the film follows one such Stalker as he leads two other men, Writer and Professor, into the forbidden territory.
